L’Alhambra House is a magnificent Italianate style historic estate situated on a prominent hill overlooking Historic Ellicott City in Oella and conveniently located between Baltimore & Washington, D.C.  L’Alhambra was built in 1859 by John Ellicott of Elias, the 11th grandson of Andrew Ellicott, one of the original founding brothers of Ellicott Mills on the Patapsco River. The house is highlighted by a mixture of Italianate and Greek Revival elements, including a deep two story porch with 6 commanding columns on both levels.  One end of the house features three stories topped by a tower, also referred to as the “turret” that rises well over 30 feet high.

The house has been well maintained by various owners throughout the history of the structure, and meticulously restored by its present day owners.  The interior of the house features restored random width hardwood flooring, 12 foot ceilings w/ graceful crown moldings, spectacular period clawfoot tub with glass enclosure, Victorian wallpaper and fixtures, a completely remodeled period farmhouse kitchen, and massive fireplaces in multiple rooms.  Portions of the floor to ceiling windows still retain the original hand blown glass from the 18th century.

The house was built on the summit of a sloping hill, with almost an acre of landscaped grounds and immense old trees in the front and 3 acres of deep old growth woods in the back.  Present day grounds’ surrounding the L’Alhambra house is just as impressive as the house.   Over the years, various owners have added many features including a 12 foot deep swimming pool w/ restored bath house, a 4 car garage, a large carriage house with heat and electric, a quaint gazebo, and a small fish pond.  The back yard drops off a steep grade and features multilevel brick patios with a built in brick grill.  Custom decking surrounds massive granite rocks, offering stunning views of lush forest.  There are winding brick walkways throughout the yard, dirt trails into the forest, and a short hike through the woods to an enormous 25 foot waterfall along the back borders of the property.

If John Ellicott were still alive today, he would be pleasantly surprised to find  not only do many original elements remain intact, that the house still commands a presence over the Patapsco River valley, awing guests and visitors alike.  Over the years, the L’Alhambra has changed many hands but it seems that each owner realizes the significance of this special place and the historical importance of keeping the L’Alhambra just the way it was originally meant…a beautiful Italianate estate.
