Tico Machiran is a living legacy. Right beside him, and sometimes even taking the lead, is his life-long love Rose, their five adult children and a stampede of eleven grandchildren.
Well known in the crowd of fans on the bleachers at Mt. Hebron High School, Tico and Rose are no stranger to those who have joined in on the years of off-key concerts, plays and PTA meetings and among those in each of the annual athletic fundraisers and girl scout cookie brigades.
Tico and Rose have also been known to care for a runny nose and broken bone or two in that crowd, however, their care-taking is best known beyond their Ellicott City neighborhood and Howard County School system to friends and families in and around the Catonsville and St. Agnes hospital areas where Tico and Rose operate a family medical office practice on Maiden Choice Lane.
“My father was the best doctor and my mother the best nurse I ever knew,” says Tico when asked why he wanted to become a physician. Dr. Machiran, as he is more well known, or, Dr. Tico, to those with charts going back decades, was inspired by his family’s deep-rooted interest in medicine and the care for others.
Tico’s family legacy led him to medical school and right into the arms of his bride, Rose. They shared a special love for one another and one in-common in the care for the elderly.
After medical school, Tico put his heart in motion at St. Agnes, taking rounds almost every day while Rose could be found tending to patients in their own, home-grown, assisted living business.
Driven to do more for the area and its aging patient population, Tico joined a development partnership who would come to purchase and develop property which would attract important medical office specialty to the Catonsville area, provide space for the medical office Tico occupies today and offer a unique opportunity for Tico to develop a portion of the property for the kind of expanded assisted care housing for which he and Rose dreamed.
“One of the judges fell in love with our assisted living homes design,” said Tico of his experience working with Baltimore County planning and zoning on one of his early development proposals for the site. “He made me promise I would find room for his mother once the construction was complete,” Tico adds with a proud smile.
Years of tireless effort and design helped Tico and his partners succeed in the development of three medical, multi-specialty, office buildings at the site, however, the balance of land and buildable parcels remain as a kind of field of dreams today.
“I am ready now to begin to write my memoirs,” says Tico, lamenting over the incomplete site. “It saddens me not to have been able to complete what I loved and designed and I hope the property can find another dreamer like me and I can see it as it should be,” he finishes.
Tico’s property is considered prime residential and commercial land located at and adjacent to 720 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville Maryland. The property is in four parcels, totals over 11 acres and includes Tico’s 8,100 square foot 3 story medical office building. The zoning for the property is DR 5.5 and OR (Office Residential) and can accommodate many uses. Interestingly, it is located across the street from what is known as the largest senior living complex in Maryland, Charlestown Senior Living.
The property will be sold by public auction on Wednesday, November 28th at 2pm by the A.J. Billig Company. If you know a dreamer, please share!
